If you have an Apple Watch, you may install our Lumos app for the Apple Watch. This will allow you to activate the turn signals on the helmet with your hand signals done via your Watch hand.
Depending on whether you wear your Watch on your left or right hand, you can signal as below:
Before you start, please make sure you're on the most updated version of Watch OS.
1. Click on the Watch icon on your phone.
2. Scroll down to "Available Apps" > Click "Install"
Once you installed the app on your Watch, you'll need to calibrate it to your helmet.
Simply follow the steps on your Watch to calibrate. We also highly recommend you to watch this video to see how it's done.
Some useful notes to consider:
- During the calibration, you'll need to note the exact position of how your calibrate. For example if you extend your arm for a turn signal, it matters whether your palms are facing up, down, or forward. When you activate, be sure to have your position fairly exact to as when you calibrate it.
- During calibration, between motions, be sure to put your hand back in riding position -- or as close as possible. Sit on your bike seat, grasp your handlebars, lean forward if you usually actually lean forward when you're riding. This is your riding position.
- By 'shaking' your wrist to turn it off, we mean rotating it back and forth, not unlike if you were checking your watch several times fast.
A tip on calibration:
Assuming you wear your Watch on your left hand:
If your wrists are mostly facing up in riding position like the image below:
We recommend that your left turn signals have your palms facing forward (Watch facing back).
If your wrists are mostly facing the side in riding position like the image below:
we recommend your left turn signals should have your palms facing down (Watch facing up).
This gives an additional dimension of difference from your usual riding position the Watch can recognize and minimizes the chance of accidentally triggering a turn signal.
To recalibrate, simply click the top right button on your Lumos Helmet Watch app -- it should look like a target/aiming circle.
1) Press 'Start' on the Watch app to start the gesture recognition feature
2) To activate a turn signal you must first start from your riding position (e.g. your hands are on your handlebars and then extended to activate signal).
3) This means after you shake your wrist to turn off the signal, you should return to your arm riding position before activating the next signal.

The Watch recognizes a gesture only by the difference in orientation between your Riding Position and your Left or Right gesture. By orientation we mean how it is positioned along all 3 axes.
During calibration, we capture the 3 final orientations: riding position, left gesture, and right gesture. We cannot overemphasize the importance of being precise with these poses. E.g. standing vs sitting on a bike seat can make a pretty big difference to the angle of the Watch face.
It also helps to choose left/right gestures that are distinct enough from the riding position.
We understand how hard it is to be consistently precise with our gestures. We are constantly weighing this against loosening the requirements, which may lead to fray movements setting off the turn signals. Cycling is, after all, a dynamic activity.
